Just 8kms off the coast of Townsville lies the glorious Magnetic Island. The island got its name from Captain Cook who believed the island’s magnetic field was effecting his navigational equipment, however it is now believed the explorer simply had a broken compass. Over half of the island is world heritage-listed. On any given day, hit the walking trails to catch a glimpse of native Australian wildlife including koalas, echidnas and wallabies. Magnetic Island boasts 27 beaches for those wanting to soak up some sun. By car

The drive from Cairns to Townsville via National Highway A1 and Bruce Highway will require about four hours.

When to visit Townsville

Like most of far North Queensland, Townsville experiences tropical storms and the chance of tropical cyclones between November and May. The period June to October proves popular with visitors where the sun is still shining bright but there is much less chance of rain.
