The everlasting blue skies make Townsville the perfect place to spend most of your time outdoors. Visiting one of the many gardens or beaches is the perfect way to explore if you are on a budget. Check out The Strand, a well-maintained grass area along the Townsville foreshore with a fantastic water play area bound to keep the kids occupied for hours. Families will also enjoy Riverway, a park along the river with plenty of picnic and barbecue spots. The Palmeton is a beautifully maintained botanical garden celebrating all things palm tree and is free to explore. For fun by the water, try Bluewater a lively freshwater area popular with picnicking families, or one of the many beaches including Saunders Beach, Bushland Beach or the more isolated Toomulla Beach.
Reef HQ is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium. Walk under 2.5 million litres of water and experience the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef without getting wet.

Just 8kms off the coast of Townsville lies the glorious Magnetic Island. The island got its name from Captain Cook who believed the island’s magnetic field was effecting his navigational equipment, however it is now believed the explorer simply had a broken compass. Over half of the island is world heritage-listed. On any given day, hit the walking trails to catch a glimpse of native Australian wildlife including koalas, echidnas and wallabies. Magnetic Island boasts 27 beaches for those wanting to soak up some sun. Plus, there is bike riding, sailing, horse riding, snorkelling, diving and many more activities to keep you occupied on your visit to the island.
