Australia has more than 500 national parks covering more than 28 million hectares – nearly four per cent of the Australian land mass. Find a holiday park, camping ground or cabin

National parks offer unspoilt landscapes and the opportunity to be among a diverse number of native plants and animals. By camping in national parks, visitors get to learn about its environment, heritage and culture.

Spending a night or two getting back to nature helps quieten the noise of everyday life, reminding us of life's simple pleasures, such as the taste of damper cooked on coals, listening to animal and birdsong, or looking at the stars.

Why not try camping in Royal National Park – Australia's first national park, south of Sydney – with its popular coastal walk? This 30km track skirts the park's eastern edge and delivers breathtaking coastal scenery.

Or camp on the Lamington Plateau, Lamington National Park, which is set in Queensland's McPherson mountain range, 900m above sea level. This park is part of the Shield Volcano Group – the plateaus and cliffs here are the remnants of the huge, 23-million-year-old Tweed volcano.

If you wish to sample NSW national park camping, be sure to visit the popular Booderee National Park and Botanic Gardens. Declared as a nature reserve in 1971, it boasts unspoiled beaches and rich flora and fauna. The beach at Greenpatch is said to have the whitest sand in the world. There are also plenty of surf breaks on the ocean sides of the park.
