Gemseekers has many trees, shrubs and plants, selected for their colour, foliage and ability to survive times of drought. Now, after nearly 15 years, it is hard to believe that this park was once a spear grass paddock on the edge of the town of Rubyvale, which is the Hub of the Central Queensland Sapphire Fields. Known to many folk, worldwide, these Gem fields yield blue, green, yellow and parti-coloured sapphires as well as champagne and sherry coloured zircons.
All the fossicking areas set aside by DNR-Mines for visitors are easily accessible in conventional vehicles. You can go to Reward, Middle Ridge, Washpool, Glen Alva or Graves Hill to try your luck. These require a fossicking licence which is currently $8.20 for a couple and $5.80for an Individual for one month. Fossicking gear is also available in Rubyvale, for a small charge.
Should you prefer to be less physical/adventurous, try a bucket of wash, (gravel) from a Fossicking Park, where you do not require a licence, and they have all the equipment set up for your use and at the price of one bucket $7.00... Good value or you can join a tag-a-long tour. There is a daylong Safari Sightseeing and Digging Tour. See and do everything in one day.
There are underground mines (no ladders), for guided tours and lots of shops to browse. Within 300m of Bedford Gardens there is a supermarket, newsagency, post office, hotel and cafes
